Hi,

Every so often, it’s useful to look at the podcast project and see if its worth the work. Originally I was going to do an annual check-in, but I lost that chance this year because of  some playing about that Patreon were doing. So, time for the semiannual audit, as part of the planning for the new year.

So…the version of WordPress I use is free, which is why it has intrusive adverts. The version of Libsyn I use costs USD5 per month. Sometimes, when I have larger files to send, I upgrade to a USD15 per month plan. So, if you add a larger Libsyn, Paypal, and Patreon costs, that’s how you get to the USD27 level that’s been floating on Patreon unfulfilled for a few years. The current Paetreons pay USD 18, which pays for the Libsyn, and the rest is sitting waiting for a project – probably a paid map for the Cornwall project.

The downloads for the podcast look like this: since 26 May 2016.

  • Before Nov 1, 2017 (Legacy) 7,794
  • After Nov 1, 2017 15,952
  • All Time: 23,746

So, that’s roughly 23 downloads a day, or 761 per month.  Given that Ars is a tiny niche, that’s actually a really good sets of number. The blog gets about 35 clicks a day., which is to say, just under 1100 a week. I think things spiked a little after the Bundle of Holding. It seems to have created tiny independent communities of fans, I’ve run into people on Reddit who didn’t know about the Atlas Forum, for example.
